March 14 marks Pi Day, an annual celebration of the mathematical sign pi. Pi Day was celebrated for the first time in 1988 by American physicist Larry Shaw as the numerical date (3.14) represents the first three digits of pi. It also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday.
Others opt to celebrate Pi Approximation Day (also known as Casual Pi Day) on July 22, representing the fraction 22/7, which is a way of working out an approximate value for Pi.
The Pi symbol was introduced by William Jones, a Welsh mathematician, in 1706. Pi is the ratio of the circumference of any circle to the diameter of that circle. The value of Pi was determined till a record-breaking 22 trillion decimal places in 2017.
Who found pi in India?
Aryabhata discovered an approximation of pi, 62832/20000 = 3.1416.
Happy Pi Day.
